JSATand Progress in Satellite Industry
JSAT was formed in 1985 as Japan's first private-sector satellite operator. The actual provision of satellite communications services began in 1989 following the launch of JCSAT-1. Since then, JSAT has grown and evolved in step with advances in the global satellite communications and broadcasting services.

JSAT receives NTT Communications Corporation's ownership interest in N-STARa and N-STARb.
April
  Company changes name to

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) formed through merger of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA).

Japan CableCast Inc. launches the JC-HITS service for cable TV operators.
March
SKY Perfect Communications Inc. and Plat One Corp., Ltd. merge, renaming the 110-degree CS digital broadcasting service "SKY PerfecTV! 100."
 
2005
June
- SKYPerfect Marketing, Co., Ltd. begins rental services for SKY Perfec TV! set-top boxes.
- Master Agreement signed between JSAT and U.S.-based PanAmSat Corporation to push forward the Horizons-2 satellite project (74 degree west longitude orbital slot), the second project between the two companies in North America.
August
- Intelsat, Ltd. announces the acquisition of PanAmSat Corporation, becoming the world's largest satellite operator.
- IP-based video-on-demand (VOD) and IP broadcasting by USEN Corp., KDDI Corp., Softbank Corp., and others get under way in Japan.

- Telecommunications Council releases second interim report on the role of the goverment in promoting the use and spread of terrestrial digital broadcasting.
- Approves retransmission of digital terrestrial broadcasting by satellite, by IP multicasting.
2005
March
- JSAT sells all shares of Japan CableCast Inc. to SOZO Kobo, Inc.
April
- Launch of JCSAT-5A

- Launch of JCSAT-3A
April
- One segment broadcasting bigins.
Cable TV operators began triple-play services.
Intensifying competition between satellite service providers, communications carriers, and cable TV operators.
