The
greatest advantage of satellite communications is the ability to transmit the
latest information from anywhere on the globe to a virtually unlimited number
of locations at once. Essential to making such worldwide communications a reality,
however, is a global network. Relatively easy to assemble, such a network would
need only three geostationary satellites, in theory, at an altitude of approximately
36,000 km to cover the entire planet.
JSAT has much experience in supplying satellite-based telecommunications
links, including Internet backbones and international video transmission
services throughout the Asia-Pacific region. These services take full
advantage of JSAT's expansive coverage, which extends from Pakistan
and India through Oceania to Hawaii and North America.
The U.S. market represents an enormous source of marketable content. Demand from
ISPs in China and other Asian nations is extremely strong for links to the U.S.
that can provide access to this content. Meanwhile, many Asian nations hold high
hopes for satellite communications, which can overcome the difficulties they face
in building a terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure that can handle large
volumes of data.
In March 2002, the JCSAT-2A satellite was launched to serve Asia, Hawaii and the
rest of Oceania. This satellite greatly expanded the coverage of JSAT's international
telecommunications services and increased the supply of satellite-based telecommunications
channels. JSAT will continue to enhance services for the Asia-Pacific region,
where demand is expected to continue increasing sharply. Key to accomplishing
this will be establishing a framework that gives JSAT the ability to rapidly satisfy
client needs. |

| JSAT provides international transmission services via
JCSAT-1B, JCSAT-2A, JCSAT-3, and Horizons-1 satellites. JSAT plays
a pivotal role in global communication services in various businesses
including Internet back bones in the Asia-Pacific region and providing
trans-oceanic service for transmission of content including news,
sports events and video entertainment. These services are provided
by making the most of our assets in Hawaii. |
